Black Boys and Men Podcast Carlton Mackey

Black Men Smile® founder Carlton Mackey was recently interviewed by Rose Pierre-Louis, Chief Operating Officer of NYU’s McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, for the second season of the podcast, Black Boys and Men: Changing the Narrative.

The Black Boys & Men: Changing the Narrative podcast series brings together thought leaders from the public and private sectors to analyze stereotypes and dispel myths concerning Black boys and men, while providing facts and best practices for those working with these often marginalized populations. The series calls into question issues of systemic racism and oppression and provides concrete steps to prevent and address many of the issues that disproportionately affect Black boys and men, including health disparities, incarceration, trauma, and violence.

“It may not take hold or root immediately, the work that we’re doing — particularly with young people. But I think I’m an example of whether we know it or not, we’re planting seeds. We’re broadening the spectrum of human behavior by modeling that something other than these other stimuli that are being fed into us can be possible … I think that seeing a spectrum of ways of being, helps us call upon those things when we need them." — Carlton Mackey
